"…Let's Ride"

There’s a new form of DH (downhill) biking that has earned the name “extreme” mountain biking, and for very good reason. It’s quickly becoming a very popular sport with the adrenaline junkies. Extreme mountain biking takes you further up the mountain to the more rugged and more severe terrain than regular biking does, even more trederous than DH biking.

Although an offspring of mountain biking, extreme biking standards are very different. You don’t just jump on the bike and ride down the mountain. This sport will put your body and your bike through intense physical stress. Testing your fitness and the durability of your equipment. You need to be in peak physical condition and if you are truely interested in this sport, there’s alot of key elements you need to remember. You’re going to be riding off of cliffs and down rock walls, you’re going to ride in places you never thought your bike could go. Here are a few basic pieces of “The Kit” that you’ll need to get started.

PLEASE NOTE: This IS NOT for beginner riders, this is a very dangerous and very violent form of mountain biking that requires years of experience.

The most obvious thing you will need first is a good bike. Finding the right bike at the right price can be a major factor in determining whether you venture forth or not. A run of the mill bike simply will not due, you need to find a bike that can handle difficult terrain and downhill biking conditions. I recommend looking for a good quality DH mountain bike and would strongly consider buying a second-hand one to save some money. You also want to have it professionally tuned at a respected bike shop to ensure it’s at peak performance.

Your most important pieces of equipment are your helmet, goggles, and pads and this needs to be taken seriously. You need a helmet that is thick and strong and able to withstand traumtic impacts. It’s always best to give yourself the best protection possible in case you do have an accident. Your helmet can mean the difference between life and death. Goggles, another essential, will spare your eyes from all the dirt and debris being kicked up and also protect them from “rogue” branches and bugs.

Some more essential pieces of safety equipment are body armor panels. They are available for your chest, back, shoulders, arms, legs, and feet. They will protect you against collisions with the various destructive forces that are gonna be constantly present. 

Let’s talk physical fitness:

Maybe you think you’re ready to just go out and hit the terrain, because you have all your equipment set…… WRONG – your body will still have to be in top physical shape to handle the forces of extreme mountain biking. Swimming is an excellent source of exercise to help keep your body in shape. If you choose to go out without the proper physical conditioning, you will most definately end up in dangerous situations with potential muscle failure or have a violently fatal wreck. This sport not only is a great buzz and alot fun, IT IS ABSOLUTELY EXTREME….and it needs to be treated as such.

 

Final Thought:

There’s a new extreme sport on the scene. Extreme mountain biking is taking the nation by storm and even though you may think you’re ready for the challenge… this is a violently dangerous sport. If you’re not absolutely 100 % ready and alert, it can end in a fatal accident on any given day. This is an expert sport and needs to be treated as such, it takes years of mastering your skills to reach the level needed for extreme mountain biking. Ride safe…
