This is a great story about my brother Pete and I, and one of our latest mountain 
bike adventures…
We decided to go to one of our favorite spots, Little Massebesic lake in Auburn NH, aka… The Maze.This is a section of woods with a spider web of trails that network through swamps and hills and cross roads and spread through the wilderness, alot more than any map will show. Pete purchased a new Camelbak, water filled back-pack, and wanted to try it out. There’s a hose that runs over your shoulder from the pack and is easily accessible to your mouth. so we hit the store for some water, and headed out.
We’re out on the trails now just cruisin’ along, crankin’ through the woods, sparying each other with mud, getting warmed up for the smaller “fox trails”, smaller more advanced trails, single file, that connect many pieces of the trail network. It’s the best map I could find and as I said, there is no map that shows all the trails out there in the woods.
We’re flying down the trails and suddenly I notice that Pete’s seat is leaking…..
WHAT?!?!?!?!???
His seat is leaking. Pete has one of those super-jumbo, gel-infused, form-fitting, comfort-enhanced, blah blah blah…..seats, and I actually thought for a second that his seat had sprung a leak. It had a blow-out from bouncing around under his rump.
I yelled for him to stop and when he finally did, he reached for his camelbak straw and took a big pull off it… to no avail. He looked at me and said, “It’s empty dude. Where did it go, it’s just……gone. What?”
And that is when it hit me, that wasn’t his seat leaking. He managed to slice his new camelbak with a razorblade while removing the tags. He sliced a small hole through the outer casing and into the inner water sack, slicing that too. The best part was that he didn’t feel it running down his back or into his pants and couldn’t figure out where it went. I thought, “I can have some fun with this.”
And I did, for a short while, have him believing that he never filled it. That only lasted for a little while though, afterall… a soaking wet back-side can get pretty uncomfortable after some time of hard riding.
We did have a very good ride that day, rode some fox trails and found some more “not on the map”. Making for another great story to share. Happy trails
FINAL THOUGHT:
A valuable lesson can be learned here, a couple actually. One is to be very careful anytime you use something sharp, you never know what could happen. Second, always check and double check your bike and all your equipment before you leave the house and once more when you get to the trail head. You could get stuck in a bad situation out in the middle of nowhere.
